She was the 2nd wife of my 3xgreat grandfather William Tulloch & they lived at Hellihow, Burness Parish, Sandey.
I was told this story by my great aunt, Lizzie Thomson, who said it was a plate that was spun in the kirn. Marwick must be confusing ‘cap’ for ‘kap’ a wooden cup. A kirn-cap was used for lifting buttermilk out of the kirn. The story is also told in a booklet of North Ronalsey tales by John Muir, but I don’t have access to this publication.
Lizzie Thomson told of another tale referring to Owld Eppy. She took a spite on my 2xgreat grandmother Maggie Rousey (Lizzie’s granny) when her cow strayed onto Hellihow’s land. Eppy put her hands around the cow and uttered some strange words. Maggie swore the cow never milked again.
Brian W Tullochnoreply@blogger.com
