Don't Fear The Spinsterhood...

We love It's A Wonderful Life here at Orkney Library and Archive, don't get us wrong, but there is one scene in particular which irks us a little:

Yes, we are all spinsters, yes, we all wear spectacles and yes we dress like our grans but no librarian or archivist would ever, ever break into a run.

  1. But would a self-respecting archivist or librarian scream and faint? I screamed once, on my way into the Michigan State University archives, but I won't tell you why. ^_^

In case I don't get back to visit before then, wishing you all a very Merry Christmas, and a new year full of good health, good friends, and some sunshine!

  2. We scream and faint on a daily basis for various reasons: discovery of mildew, readers using pens, cap-less bottles of fizzy soda, handsome men crossing the threshold... the list goes on

A very merry festive season to you too! (And please tell us why!)

  3. Um...sorry it took me a month and 10 days to get back to you. I've been reading the blog, but not always the comments.

I don't want to write anything offensive or graphic here, so will speak very obliquely about why I screamed on my way into the MSU Archives. It's funny to me now.

I was followed by a male "person" who thought he could get away with some inappropriate behavior. I screamed, and instead of running away, did something really stupid and turned and yelled at him. He was about a foot taller than me, but having 4 brothers gave me a good clue as to how to browbeat him. He sure looked surprised when I screamed loudly in his face "DON'T EVER DO THAT AGAIN!!" after which, I bolted through the door into the Archives and collapsed in a heap next to the director's desk (archives provide refuge for more than dusty documents!).

LIke I said, it's funny now, especially when I think about how shocked he looked that I dared turn and yell at him. I'll bet he didn't try that stunt again!

I wish you could find my Culbert ancestors in Orkney, but I don't think that's where they came from. I think they were from another part of Scotland.

  4. What a thrilling tale, well done for yelling!

Culbert is not a very Orcadian name, you are right, they seem to have been mainly concentrated across Central and West Scotland.

Are you delighted by what you have just read? Are you revulsed and appalled? Do let us know, we'd love to hear from you.
